An adjuvant is an ingredient added to a vaccine that helps increase the body’s immune response to the vaccine. They stimulate the immune system by enhancing the presentation of the antigen (what body is making the immune response to), and/or by providing or increasing danger signals (co-stimulation signals) used to make an immune response.

Aluminium salts are most often used in today’s vaccines.
